Facebook Improves Friend @Mention Tagging Feature
Tagging your friends in one of your status updates or replies to posts is one way of getting their attention. Originally this feature mentioned the whole name of your friend as it appears in Facebook. This means that if your friend is named “Johnny Doe Junior” then the whole name “Johnny Doe Junior” will be mentioned in the tag.
Facebook has made a change to this recently by allowing you to shorten this instead of mentioning the full name. Now you can just use the tag Johnny by editing out the full name and the correct person will be tagged.
This makes the process of mentioning your friends name in posts more casual and informal than when mentioning the whole name which was more formal. It also makes the posts more readable instead of being skimmed.
The Facebook tagging feature is done by typing “@” then the name of the person. A drop down menu will appear with friends having the name you chose. Clicking on the correct friend will highlight their name in blue in your post.
This new feature introduced by Facebook is only applicable to tagged friends. If you tag events, groups or pages the names cannot be shortened.
