Facebook Releases Mobile Chat App

Last Tuesday, Facebook launched a new group chat app for the iPhone called Messenger for Mobile. It is an answer to the Google+ feature called Huddle, which is available in its mobile apps for iOS and Android devices.

Facebook chatFacebook is still the top social networking site and has a much bigger user base but it seems like it’s playing catch up with Google’s new social network, which is only a month old. Google+ app for the Android and iOS devices came with the group chat feature.

Facebook’s Messenger for Mobile app functions the same as Google+’s Huddle, which is available for its mobile apps and similar to group MMS. A user can create as many Huddles as he likes and can choose who could join the Huddle. Other Huddle members can add others into it as well.

Facebook’s Messenger for Mobile is similar to Google+ Huddle. It lets group messaging between Facebook friends. It has the option to include location data for the participants. People who don’t have smartphones can still receive and send messages with the use of traditional SMS but they must first register with Facebook.

Facebook Messenger for Mobile is a free app and requires iOS 4.0 or later. It is compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad but it has not been optimized for the Apple tablet.
