Gamers Spend 75% Of Their Time Playing Social Games
The study has been conducted and the results are in—social games are taking over online activities. In a study sponsored RockYou, the preeminent gaming software company, it’s emerging that social gamers spend more than 75% of their time online playing social games like Farmville.
Dubbed the ‘Social Gamer Thought Leadership Study’, a total of 2000 social gamers over 18 years and older and included a mix of 40% males and 60% females. The study, which is the first of its kind, represents a partnership between RockYou and marketing research firm, Interpret was aimed at measuring and analysing the motivations, purchase intent and behavioural underpinnings of the social gaming demographic.
The actual numbers that were revealed in the study are not entirely surprising, in fact, the numbers bear out the common conception among experts about the gaming habits of people in the target demographic. According to one expert, “hearing that social gamers spend 9.5 hours playing games, out of the 13 or so hours spent on social networks is not earth shattering”. What was somewhat surprising however, was the level at which social gamers are receptive to in-game ads. The study revealed that 42% of social gamers would play more if real-world currency was offered as an incentive.
All in all the results of the study will help advertisers, gaming developers and social networks better plan their gaming offers. Let’s just hope that advertisers don’t take the 75% game-time as an invite for bombarding social gamers with messages.
