Facebook Estimated To Surpass 100 Billion Photo Uploads
The photo uploads and sharing business seems to be gathering momentum and the fact that some of the web’s most powerful tech companies are getting in on the act is a testament to this. Twitter recently took back the handling of photo uploading and sharing from one its biggest API developer, Twitpic and now Facebook seems to be reaping some benefits from incorporating uploading to its 800 million active user strong platform.
In a recent infographic produced by Facebook plugin creators, Pixable, the scale of growth of Facebook’s own photo uploading and sharing activities was laid bare. The graphic painted a picture of extraordinary growth. At the end of 2010, Facebook had 60 billion photo uploads; since then the site has been adding around 1 billion uploads a month. This has prompted experts at Pixable to predict that the social networking giant will surpass the 100 billion uploads mark by the summer of 2012.
The study also revealed a few interesting facts about the timing and upload and demographics. The majority of uploads take place on the weekend and women outshine men in terms of number of total uploads. Interestingly, older users of the platform upload as many photos as younger users.
Clearly then, Facebook’s share of the photo uploading and sharing market will continue to grow as the number of active users increase on the platform. When that happens, the total number of uploads will almost certainly tip 3 billion.
