Facebook Plans New Data Center As Big As 180 Basketball Courts

As we all now Facebook is probably the most popular social networking site of today’s time with somewhere around/over 800 million users! This includes not only the United States but global users as well. Facebook is apparently looking to expand its company to Asia by building a new data center in Taiwan. There has not been a timeline for the construction of this new data center, or at least it has not been released yet, but according to an article in CNES the data center is supposedly going to be taking up an estimated 720,000 square feet which is an big an area as 180 basketball courts would take up!

This isn’t the only data center that Facebook has worldwide:

“With data centers already established in the US and one coming in Europe — after Facebook announced plans for a center in Sweden – the move to Taiwan will give the social network a data presence in three major global regions.”

Facebook will be handling the software aspect of this center but will be turning over the rest of the control and management to the Taiwanese manufacturers to equip it with the necessary hardware and servers. This new data center will be bringing in billions of dollars into the business for Taiwan so it is a win-win for both countries and companies involved.

In the recent months/week Taiwan has been welcoming new businesses and data centers and the business benefits that it bring them:

“Facebook’s news is likely to be welcomed by Taiwanese authorities who saw Google announce its own plan for a data center in the country last month. The government is keen to develop Taiwan as a regional center for logistics which it believes it could bring more than $3.3 billion (NT$100 million) of new business to local industries and companies.”

It will be interesting to see how Facebook continues to expand and grow around the world as a popular social networking business.
