Tagged Acquires Hi5 To Compete Against Facebook

Social networking is such a dynamic space that in the blink of an eye, gains can be wiped out without a trace. Remember when MySpace was king? Matter of fact; remember when the number three most popular social network was Hi5—that was all the way back in 2008!

Today Hi5 is a mere speck of its former self and this is perhaps why it’s now been acquired by Tagged, the social network based out in San Francisco. Details of the deal have been disclosed fully yet, but the popular consensus is that Tagged is looking to mount a serious challenge to Facebook, the undisputed king of social networking.

Can Tagged really challenge Facebook? It can, but it will need to clean up the spammy-mess that now characterizes its platform. Right now Tagged is built to annoy and unless it changes the culture of its social network, I can’t see it growing to the size of a Facebook, even if it leverages the assets of once-popular Hi5.

It will be interesting to see then how Tagged integrates the functionality of Hi5 or at the very least adapt some elements of its platform architecture. Getting a social network to keep users engaged without giving them too much to do isn’t easy. Facebook has got this down to a science and Tagged will need to use Hi5 to better this if its going to mount a serious challenge.
