Bing + Yahoo = 30.1% Search Market Share
Google is search king, that much is obvious; but the battle for second place is a tussle—a tussle that traditional minnow, Bing is starting to win.
The latest data coming out of ComScore suggests that not only is Bing catching Yahoo for second most popular search engine, it is now doing it at a faster rate. The data for last month pegged Bing at little under 15% market share, but in just 30 short days, it has come almost level with Yahoo. Present ComScore data shows Bing having a 15% market share while Yahoo has a marginal lead of 15.1%. This lead is expected to go by the time the next set of data comes out.
Google is continuing its dominance with a massive 65.4% market share—a figure that ensures that Google maintains its squeaky clean 65% and above market share for the third quarter running. So big is Google’s lead that even the quasi-amalgamation of Bing and Yahoo cannot match even half of Google’s figure. You might be aware that Bing actually powers Yahoo search so in a very real sense, they are one search engine.
In the longer term, it will be very interesting to see how Yahoo handles being surpassed by Bing; and it will also be interesting to see if Microsoft makes a play for a complete buy-out of Yahoo.
