Social Networks Surpass 1.2 Billion Users

The movie ‘The Social Network’, chronicling the rise of Steve Zuckerberg and Facebook, the world got a glimpse into the social network and its ever increasing reach into our daily lives. That reach gets measured in many ways, and the latest measurement from ComScore suggests that the relentless pace of growth is surging ahead.

According to the latest report on the state of social networking, there are over 1.2 billion on social networks around the world. This huge pool of participants makes social networking the largest online activity around the world. The report pulled no punches when it expressed the sheer size of social networking, citing that social networking is bigger than email, even bigger than porn.

With an 82% reach around the world, social networking has everybody doing it. Young and old, black and white, tall and short—everyone is social networking. Which makes social networks a big target for advertisers (part of the reason by the way, Facebook is worth so much). The report also touched on the influence mobile growth is having on social networking. According to ComScore, in a 3 month period, more than 53% of mobile users actively engaged with various brands and entertainment properties. In other words, the mobile platforms are where the action is. Little surprise then that social networking overall, is tipped to be the activity that defines our lives for the next decade at least.
