YouTube Is The #2 Social Network With 25% Share Of Visits
YouTube isn’t often considered as a social networking powerhouse, but the latest numbers coming out of Hitwise are suggesting that the video-sharing moniker may need to be reconsidered. According to Hitwise, the UK alone accounted for 606 million visit to YouTube over the course of December 2011. When the UK data is aggregated across social networking traffic, YouTube accounts for more than 25% of all social networking traffic in the UK.
The UK contribution to social video sharing and interaction is highest in the world—a whopping 800 times higher than the global contribution. Of course, while YouTube has social networking elements, it’s not a social network proper. This is reflected in the wider numbers with Facebook grabbing the lion’s share of social networking traffic in the UK. The fact that Twitter is trailing YouTube in third place is however quite telling.
What does the future look like for YouTube in the UK and globally? Google it seems is bent on making YouTube more of a commercial platform and by the end of 2012, you should start seeing more and more advertising (presently ads are streamed in the middle of videos). How this direction will attract traffic numbers remains to be seen, but it will be interesting to watch.
