Facebook Made $3.8 Billion In Ad Revenue In 2011

The Facebook IPO is nearly upon us, so I suppose now is as good a time as any for the social networking giant to drop its revenue figures for last year (2011). For now though, we’ll just have to rely on the data coming out of third-party Facebook assessors because the fine folks over at Facebook are keeping mum.

So what do we know? According to popular research firm, eMarketer Inc, Facebook has seen draw dropping growth in the last few years. According to data released by the firm, Facebook had total ad revenues in 2009 of just over $738 million. Last year that figured was almost five times the ’09 amount, coming in at a whopping $3.8 billion.

Much of the growth has been driven by third-party Facebook ads businesses such as the Boston based Nanigans, which by its own numbers, has had consistent year-on-year growth on the platform in the last few years. Facebook too has stepped up the marketing of its ad platform and presently offers incentives to advertisers who keep the traffic on the platform. Even recently, we wrote about the fact that Facebook has taken to emailing companies (cold) in an effort to get them to buy ads.

The Facebook IPO is rumored to be happening before May 2012, so I suppose Facebook might let slip what its real numbers are before then—at the very least its filing with the SEC will make things clear.
