FBI Plans To Monitor Twitter And Facebook Content
Facebook and Twitter may be seen by most to be the social hangouts for most people, but both platforms are increasingly being used by governments around the world to monitor the behavior and actions of its citizens. China is perhaps the biggest and most overt example of government control over the internet and social networking but the US government is fast becoming like China.
The FBI recently announced that it was in talks with developers to build an app that scrapes and maps social media activity and data. The reason for the creation of the super-snooping app is the usual fare (cybercrime, terrorism and general surveillance) but privacy advocates are reportedly very uncomfortable about the idea. Whether this voice of dissent is enough to halt the development of such an app is anyone’s guess, but in many respects is there any point?
Presently the FBI and most other government agencies are able to access your personal data from Facebook and Twitter by just asking for it; building an app would only give the feds more direct access. Even Twitter announced recently that it will start censoring tweets based on requests from government entities around the world. In simple terms: Facebook and Twitter is already a place where your data is not safe from prying eyes.
