Single Facebook Post Gets 1 Million Comments

Facebook is now considered such an entrenched part of modern life that pretty much anything that is done on the platform on a wide scale attracts attention—even from the Guinness Book of World Records.

The latest single activity to get massive attention is a post started by avid Frontierville player Cathy Matthews. Apparently Matthews wanted to garner some attention online and started a post asking people to comment in an effort to set a new record. Little did she know that she would create such a firestorm of interest, which to date has created over 1,000,733 comments. This number beats the previous record set by an Italian man that garnered over 529,335.

Now you might be thinking why this is a big deal, and in some ways you would be right in thinking that. But the millions of people who joined the conversation were enough to capture even the attention of the media. Matthews even made it onto Fox 40 Sacramento where she gave an interview about the record itself and why she attempted to break it. According to Matthews, “I’m no spring chicken anymore and I really haven’t done anything phenomenal.”

Call it what you want, but these sort if things that elicit public and media attention are the future of the web. The only thing person like Matthews have to learn to do now is monetize.

Is a record for most comments on a Facebook post a royal waste of time? Share your thoughts below.
