Android Now Has 50% Of The U.S. Market

Apple is now the world’s largest company but you’d never tell that based on how fast Google’s own raft of offerings is growing—especially Android.

The mobile OS now accounts for 50% of the US market and by the look of things, this will be trending up. According to data-mining an analytics company ComScore, Android topped the 50% market share mark this past February and this figure represents a 17-point increase over Android’s share of the market in the February 2011.

Apple saw growth too, but it wasn’t on the scale that Android had. The maker of the iOS mobile platform saw market share of 30.2%–a 5-points jump over market share recorded in the same month of 2011.

The biggest loser in terms of market share was RIM, the maker of the Blackberry smartphone. It saw a decline in market share from 28.9% back in February of 2011 to a meager 13.4% in the same month of 2012. RIM wasn’t alone in the loss of traction in the market. Microsoft with its Windows Phone platform saw a decline from 7.7% to 3.9%.

The ComScore data is a tale of Google dominance; all platforms that lost market share did so to Android, and although Apple enjoys a decent share of the market, it’s a matter of time before it gets gobbled up too.
