Facebook Has 58 Million Mobile Only Users Per Month
Smartphones may be getting smarter and Tablets may be flying off the shelves, but this doesn’t mean that ‘Facebookers’ prefer to use their favorite site on any of these devices. I say this because Facebook has just revealed that at a time when many are predicting the eventual demise if the PC, it currently has only 58 million mobile-only users (each month).
According to data coming out of Facebook’s S-1 filing with the SEC, a whopping 432 million people used the site on a mobile device at some point during the month of December 2011. The 58 million of course is just a small fraction of this interaction and for many it’s a very minute dent to the 800 million or so active users that Facebook gets each month.
The small number is expected to become a really big number as people become more and more comfortable with using their mobile phones and tablets to do the bulk of their internet heavy lifting. The time horizon for that occurrence is predicted to occur in the next 3 – 5 years; this is when tablet sales are expected to eclipse PC sales on all platforms.
For now though, Facebook users are still showing a preference for interaction via a PC. Until Facebook and mobile devices converge both from a usability and convenience standpoint, this love affair will continue.
