Pinterest Now The 3rd Most Popular Social Network Beating LinkedIn

It’s not clear if it’s a case of raw female power or just the raw power of social networking nowadays, but whatever the reason, Pinterest has benefited nicely.

The popular social networking site and virtual pinboard is now the third most popular social network—beating out LinkedIn in the process. The news comes from Experian Hitwise who revealed the that based on the total number of visits by US visitors each month, Pinterest is now third behind Facebook and Twitter.

According to a rep from Hitwise, Facebook received a total of 7 billion total visits from Americans in March 2012; Twitter received 182 million; Pinterest received 104 million; LinkedIn received 86 million while tagged rounded out the top 5 with 72 million total visits. Interestingly Google+ didn’t make the top 5, having seen only 61 million visits for the month of March 2012.

This upturn of the social networking pecking order is bound to stir up speculation among analysts. One of the biggest questions will be how long Pinterest can sustain its growth; at the moment pinboarding is popular but can it last? Only time will tell. For now though, everybody is pinning—especially the females.
