42% Of Teens With Tech Access Are Cyberbullied
More than 50% of teens in the US are online and many are finding that being connected comes with a price. That price is exposure to cyberbullying; a practice that has been around for quite some time but which in recent years has gathered steam.
To put the scale of the problem in perspective, a study conducted in 2004 found that 42% of teens with tech access are cyberbullied. That number has no doubt grown since the scale of growth in both mediums of connectivity (tablets, smartphones etc.) and the liberalization of online access for young people.
The way teens deal with the problem is mixed. A study conducted by OnlineCollege.org found that around 90% of teens who witness or are exposed to cyberbullying ignore it; and only 40% will tell parents. What’s worse is that it seems many teens are bullying others for the pure fun of it. 81% said that they felt they could get away with online cyberbullying rather than doing it in person.
Many teens are finding that the scale of the problem isn’t getting better due to the impersonal nature of interaction among teens nowadays. Today most teens communicate and interact in cyberspace and through text messages. Authorities in the various social settings are playing catch-up in terms of policing it all.
For the affected teens it is up to parents and guardians to help their children cope.
