Amazon Employee Steals $160,000 Worth Of Devices

It looks like the Amazon pay structure for its lower level employees is pretty bad because one of them has just gone ahead and stolen $160,000 worth of goods.

20 year old Todd Anthony Cofield made off with a whopping 726 iPod Touch players and 49 laptops of the HP variety. Cofield didn’t do this all at once, of course, and made off with the loot over a 41 day period. Authorities were clueless for that time because Cofield falsified freight documents; it took a piece of detective work between FedEx and Amazon security to crack the one-man theft bonanza.

Cofield turned himself in once his crime came to light and posted a $50,000 bond but many are asking how one person could make off with so much stuff from an Amazon warehouse before someone spotted something was wrong. 49 laptops over 41 days means he had to have walked out or ‘trollied’ out with at least 2 laptops on one occasion. Clearly amazon security was asleep; either that or they were too busy eating donuts and reading magazines.

No doubt security will be tight at the Cayce distribution center located in South Carolina and as for Cofield? Perhaps he could start an internet business with those 49 laptops.

It’s not clear if poor pay was the factor behind this theft but Amazon had better take note.
