Apple Shuts Down MobileMe In Favor Of iCloud Which Has 125 Million Users
Users of Google’s products are no stranger to the frequent discontinuing of products, but Apple users have been somewhat immune to such capriciousness. Until now.
Apple is shutting down MobileMe, one of Apple’s less than stellar attempt at an online service. The reason is simple: Apple’s iCloud service is now strong at a 125 million users and people didn’t really take to MobileMe anyway. The page where MobileMe used to live is now just a placeholder with links and tips for moving over to iCloud.
Steve Jobs famously asked about the efficacy of MobileMe in a rather colorful way: “Can anyone tell me what MobileMe is supposed to do? “So why the f**k doesn’t it do that?” That answer obviously never came and so perhaps if Jobs were alive today he would have personally pulled the plug on MobileMe.
Perhaps now that MobileMe is out the way Steve Cook and co can focus on making iCloud much bigger than it is now. 125 million users is significant for sure, but in the age of high volume, and deep numbers, 125 million is a flash in the pan. Hopefully there weren’t enough MobileMe loyalists out there; these people may be reluctant to make the switch.
