Little green robots are everywhere now and the US is crawling with them. I am talking about Google’s Android operating software of course and according to Nielsen, the mobile OS is sprinting away from the competition.

The latest figures reveal that 51.8% of smartphone users in the US now use an Android handset. The closest rival to Android is Apple with its iOS devices hovering around at 34.3% of the market. RIM’s Blackberry comes in third with 8.1% of the market and it is followed up by Windows Phone 7 with 4.3% of the market.

Despite the massive market share enjoyed by Android devices it is important to point out that Google doesn’t make handsets and only supplies the operating system. Apple on the other hand makes everything—handset and OS. This puts it in a more robust position earnings wise—at least in the smartphone market. The next biggest manufacturer of smartphones is Samsung which clocks in at 17% share of the market.

Google has toyed with the idea of making its own handsets and its acquisition of Motorola Mobility is seen by many as a step in this direction. Creating a stunning operating system and creating a stunning mobile phone are two different challenges and Google has never been very good at producing hardware.

Whether Google can challenge Apple in both the OS and Hardware side of smartphones remains to be seen.
