U.S. Spotify Users Listened To Over 13 Billion Songs

Spotify has proven that people will pay for music and despite skepticism from many in the industry; the European-based company is doing quite well stateside. According to new data released by the company, the US side of the business is doing so much better than expected and US listeners streamed over 13 billion songs in the year since Spotify launched in the US.

The company is also seeing massive engagement with the apps that underpin much of the growth. According to Spotify: “Our free apps help you get more out of music. so far, you’ve spent the equivalent of 2,700 years discovering playlists, lyrics, concerts, and reviews (that’s equal to 23.7 million hours!).”

Perhaps Spotify’s biggest achievement in the 12 months since launch in the US has been the rediscovery of social sharing—especially of music. Shortly after launch Spotify announced a partnership with Facebook and this integration proved pivotal in increasing the number of paying subscribers on Spotify.

Months later and with a few apps thrown in for good measure, Spotify is on course for another stellar year. With free mobile radio added to its offering and apps for both Android and Apple’s iOS, 2013 looks to be a year branded with Spotify’s name on it. It will be interesting to see how the battle shapes up because we mustn’t forget that Pandora is still a big player in the streaming business, albeit with a greater concentration on radio.
